A permanent resident is a person who lives and works in the United States on a permanent basis. The proof of this status, a permanent resident card, is also called a “green card.” There are several ways to become a permanent resident, but most people are sponsored either through family or an employer.
Adjustment of status allows an applicant who is already in the United States to obtain permanent residency (a green card) without having to return to his home country to consular process or apply for an immigrant visa from abroad.
