There are two types of non-immigrant visas available for people who would like to visit the United States.
The B-1 visa is for individuals who wish to visit the United States temporarily for business purposes (e.g. to attend a conference), or for medical treatment. The B-2 visa is for individuals who wish to visit the United States temporarily for vacation or to visit family or friends.
Both are temporary visas, and those wishing to apply should be prepared to prove the visit to the U.S. will be temporary, that you are not inadmissible in any way, and that you can support yourself while in the U.S.
